Post Op day 3

I made it!!  I can hardly believe that the surgery is over. Right after I got to my hospital room, I had 10 one ounce cups of ice chips.  Go girl!  And so it began. It was tough to get all that water in.  The next morning I was given 10 more and 4 "trays" of 10 after that.  Fifty ounces before they'd discharge me home. It was hard, but I did it.  Once I was home, I didn't have the fluids staff Sargent checking on me ever ten minutes.  OMgosh....I knew this was going to happen but I had no idea how much 50 ounces of fluids really were when your stomach can only so much.  The first day was hard. Post Io day 3, I took a nice walk and I've gotten in my fluids. One thing I wasn't expecting was to have to self inject insulin.  My sugars were crazy in the hospital - home I came with syringes and insulin.  I was so depressed over this.  Thankfully I haven't had to inject too many times.  My sugars have been much better than in ...

Surgery day!!

I am just a ball of nervous and butterflies.  I can't believe my surgery date is finally here.  Nine long months of classes and counseling - and here I am waiting to head to the hospital. My journey is just beginning.  All this prep has moved me in the direction of changing my life forever.  Today on my life will never be the same.  From diet choices, losing weight and changing how I view both. I am in good hands with the surgeon and staff - and my wonderful husband has been the number 1 supporter in this process. Off I go.....

A week to go....count down begins

I’ve waited 10 years for this surgery.  Back then, the entire bypass was popular.  I’m not even sure the “sleeve” was a sleeve, or a stapling.  Technology continues to amaze me. Anyway, I thought about having this surgery a few years ago and never followed through. Either inconvenient or cost too much. Somehow I found a way to not go through with it.  No surprising since it is a process and somewhat scary to think about.  I don’t think I was “ready” mentally.  Although now looking back, I should have done no matter what. Now I’m 53, been overweight much of my adult life, and I’m scared to death about this new journey.  Not about the surgery itself really but the expectation of the weight and completely changing all mental conditioning about food.  I’ve tried literally every diet on the planet without long term success.  I’m ashamed of myself.  I start doing great – but like all hard things in life, it got too hard and results took f...

My weight loss journey is finally underway.  I’ve started the pre- op diet and getting my mindset moving towards the new way of eating and drinking that I am going to have to get used to. I’m nervous and excited all at the same time.  Nervous, major surgery is always kind of scary, but excited to move on to this new phase of my life.  To actually envision myself LIVING life instead of feeling tired, unable and self-conscious about my weight.  I’ve wanted to do this surgery for years but for one reason or another, it just never came to pass.  At least not until last November.  Then it all happened very quickly – then slowed down again as I met my health insurance requirements for approval of the surgery.  Seven long months to be exact.  But well worth the wait.  I made the commitment and kept true to myself and what I wanted. If my surgeon had said “you need to lose 20 pounds before I’ll approve you,” I’d have done whatever I had t...
